L.I.F.E.

Holy Rosary Catholic Community began L.I.F.E. evenings four years ago.

Lifelong Intergenerational Faith Experience is a community-wide gathering of all generations to pray, to hear the Word, to form ourselves into a community as the body of Christ and to strive to live in harmony with the gospel values that Jesus has given us.

L.I.F.E. evenings begin with a light supper followed by community prayer, age-specific catechesis, and closing prayer.  Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. and the program is held 6:30-8:00 p.m. the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month beginning September 19.

Two thousand years ago, Jesus told us to “Go then to all my peoples everywhere and make them my disciples.” (Mt 28:19).  This is a teaching of continuing importance throughout the ages and never more important than it is today.  We are all called to hear, witness and pass the Gospel of Jesus Christ onto others.  We have a word for that; it is called Catechesis, which literally means to “Echo God’s Word.”  In a very real sense we are called to echo God’s Word in all we do and say.

Parents are the first and primary catechists of their children.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church states “The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute.”  Thus we hope to help parents grow in confidence that it is their right and duty (and within their capabilities) to form their children in the faith.  But L.I.F.E. needs more than just children and parents…L.I.F.E. needs the experience, the wisdom, and the prayer of all members of our community - 4 year olds through our most senior community members.

Although L.I.F.E. is our primary community-based catechetical undertaking, it is not the only one.  This brochure gives information on several other parish faith  formation activities as well.  We invite you to look them over and select one or more for your continuing journey in discipleship and register.

Why Catholic?

Why Catholic? is an adult formation program developed by Renew International and offered with the endorsement of the Diocese.  Why Catholic? offers a solid approach to help adults form their Catholic faith and connect its teachings to their everyday lives.  With its exploration of the Catechism of the Catholic church, this process encourages learning in a prayerful small-group setting.  The faith-sharing materials offer 12 sessions on Catholic beliefs with direct Catechism quotes, scriptural references and reflection questions.  This year the emphasis will be on sacraments.  The sessions will be offered at various times throughout the week.  You choose the time that is convenient for you.  Most groups will meet for six sessions in the fall and six sessions during Lent.    Begins week of Oct. 7    Adults
Faith Families
In an effort to meet the needs of families we are offering this option of catechesis.  For whatever reason, we realize that L.I.F.E. might not meet the needs of all families.  If you prefer to teach your children in a model that might resemble "Home Schooling" OR, if you and a few families would like to join together as a "Family Learning Team", Father Jerry or one of the Faith Formation Staff would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and help facilitate what you would like to do.  We can help you discern what you would like to do (either as a single family OR as a group of households desiring to  pull together and form a Family Learning Team), and then assist you in obtaining materials that would meet your needs.  A Staff person would be designated to assist you in meeting your discerned goals.  If you are interested in exploring this options further,  feel free to contact Father Jerry or Deacon Red at 847-1393.
Bible Study Programs
This year we are offering three different bible studies, all developed and presented by the acclaimed scholar and lecturer Jeff Cavins.  All three studies will be offered at times and places convenient to those who register.  The Great Adventure and Adventures in Matthew are each 24 sessions (weeks) long and Adventures in Acts is 20 sessions (weeks) in duration.  Begins week of Oct. 7    Adults
1.  The Great Adventure Bible Timeline
This Bible Study program provides a 'big picture' approach to Scripture through a study of 14 narrative books of the bible.  This helps Catholics to connect the entire bible into a chronological story of salvation history that teaches the bible as a complete story, and present the story in a way that is easy to remember.
2.  Adventures in Matthew
Building directly on the foundation laid in The Great Adventure Timeline, Adventures in Matthew focuses on Jesus as the fulfillment of the promises of the Old Testament.  It also touches on Jesus' establishment of the church as the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.  Set in the rich context of Christ's Jewish culture, this study helps us to understand the universal truths of the Kingdom of God and it will help you to understand more fully God's will for each of us today.
3.  Adventures in Acts
This is a 20-week study of the Acts of the Apostles and the story of the earliest days of the Church.  This shows how Christ's work continues through each of us in the Church today.  Here's where we "find ourselves in the Story we learned" in the Bible Timeline Study.
Liturgy of the Word for Children
This catechesis for young children takes place in the context of the Sunday Eucharist celebration year round during 9:00 a.m. Mass.  After the Opening Prayer, children are sent forth to break open God's Word on an age-appropriate level.  Children who have already received First Eucharist will return for the remaining Liturgy while younger children are free to stay for specific activities that continue to explore the Gospel Story.      Preschool-Grade 5
Wednesday Morning Scripture Study with Matthew/Mark/Luke/John
Wednesday mornings immediately following Mass (normally 10:00 a.m. when children are in school and 9:30 a.m. during the summer months) we gather to discuss the scripture readings that will be proclaimed at the following weekend liturgies.  It takes place in the parish living room in a relaxed atmosphere over coffee and fellowship.  We search and explore for the meaning of the Word of God in the here and now of our lives.  St. Augustine told us 1600 years ago that God made each of us for Himself and that we will not rest until our hears rest in Him.  Our world seeks rest, but cannot find it.  Come and let your hearts find rest.  It will gladden your day and provide meaning and preparation for attendance at the weekend Liturgy.  Year round      Adult
7th, 8th, and 9th Grades
This age group meets as part of L.I.F.E. evenings on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.  After supper and the opening prayer, the students are sent to be presented age-appropriate catechesis, and then return to the larger group for closing prayer.  While this serves as the formal catechesis, it is offered in the context of a developing program of Youth Ministry for this age group.  Please watch the Bulletin and the Parish Newsletter for the announcements concerning our Ministry to Youth.
